Houston is once again making a splash in the culinary world as three of its chefs and restaurants have been announced as finalists for the 2023 James Beard Awards. This prestigious event, often referred to as the “Oscars of the Food World,” recognizes the best and brightest talents in the industry across various categories.

Tatemó, a Mexican restaurant located on the city’s northwest side, is in the running for the Best New Restaurant award. This category highlights restaurants that have opened in the past year and have already made an impact with their unique cuisine and dining experiences. Tatemó’s traditional dishes with a modern twist have caught the attention of the judges and food critics alike.

Nancy’s Hustle, a trendy bistro in the EaDo neighborhood, has been nominated in the Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program category. This category recognizes restaurants and bars that have a stellar selection of wines, beers, cocktails, and other beverages, as well as knowledgeable staff that can guide guests through their choices. Nancy’s Hustle’s impressive wine list and innovative cocktails have secured its place as a finalist.

Lastly, Chef Benchawan Jabthong Painter from Street to Kitchen has made it to the final round in the Best Chef: Texas category. This category celebrates chefs who have made a significant impact on the Texas food scene with their culinary skills, creativity, and leadership. Chef Painter’s fusion cuisine, which combines Thai and Southern flavors, has earned her critical acclaim and a loyal following in Houston.

Houston has had its fair share of James Beard Award winners in the past, including Hugo Ortega, Justin Yu, Chris Shepherd, and Robert Del Grande. With three finalists this year, the city is once again proving its culinary prowess and adding to its already impressive reputation in the food world. The winners will be announced live in New York City on April 26, 2023.
