A new report says Houston leads the Lone Star State in the number of energy efficiency jobs, and Texas is the second-leading state for such employment in the U.S.
The findings, released earlier this week by Environmental Entrepreneurs and E4TheFuture, say the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown area employs nearly 44,000 energy efficiency workers. These include positions in manufacturing, construction and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning).
Texas overall employs 162,816 workers in energy efficiency jobs. According to the report, 17% of all energy sector jobs in Texas are energy efficiency with 13% of construction jobs in the state falling under energy efficiency.
In all, the report says energy efficiency jobs grew more than 3% in 2018 and the industry now employs 2.3 million Americans. Businesses within the industry added 76,000 net new jobs last year, which accounted for half of all net jobs added by the energy sector in the U.S.
These findings support the strength of Houston's residential construction growth. According to last month's Partnership report on building activity, construction starts reached a five-year peak of $4.1 billion in July ’18 due to strong activity in both commercial and residential starts.
