Partnership Forecasts Houston will Create 71,000 Jobs in 2019

Published Dec 14, 2018 by A.J. Mistretta

HOUSTON (Dec. 14, 2018) – The Greater Houston Partnership forecasts the Houston metro area will create 71,000 net new jobs in 2019. Health care, construction and administrative services are expected to lead employment growth, though gains are anticipated in all sectors.

If the Partnership’s annual jobs forecast holds up, the region will end the year with 3.2 million payroll jobs, a net gain of more than 600,000 over the past 10 years and the fourth-largest gain of any metro in the nation.

“Houston has emerged from one of the worst energy downturns of the past 35 years where one in every four of the region’s energy jobs was lost,” said Patrick Jankowski, Senior Vice President of Research for the Partnership. “In previous downturns, such a collapse would have devastated the entire economy. This time, Houston held up quite well because our ties to the U.S. and global economies are now just as strong as our ties to oil and gas. With energy back in the black, we are poised to see growth across the spectrum.”

New jobs forecasted for 2019 by major sector:

  • Energy: 1,900
  • Health Care & Social Services: 9,000
  • Construction 8,900 Manufacturing: 6,300
  • Finance & Insurance: 1,400

Greater Houston Partnership Receives 2024 Excellence in Economic Development Award

8/28/24
The Greater Houston Partnership received a 2024 Excellence in Economic Development Bronze Award from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). The award was bestowed specifically for the Partnership’s work in the regional or cross-border partnership for regions with 500,000 or more residents.  The strategy formed in partnership with regional allies, as elaborated in the regional playbook, aims to enhance regional economic development in greater Houston by fostering collaboration and coordination among stakeholders. This involved creating a framework for the Houston Regional Economic Development Alliance (HREDA) to maximize engagement and support.  Formed in 2006, HREDA is comprised of economic development organizations and municipalities interested in creating jobs and investment to maintain a positive business environment. HREDA meets monthly at Partnership Tower, and often at other locations around the region. Hosted monthly at Partnership Tower and other regional sites, HREDA meetings include members from 98 economic development organizations, representing over 160 full-time economic development professionals.  The project's uniqueness and innovation reside in member involvement at every stage, ensuring ownership of the final playbook. It addressed previous collaboration deficits noted in studies, aiming to leverage regional resources for economic growth. The scale of marketing the region is no small feat. Covering 8,838 square miles, the 12-county Greater Houston region, with its centerpiece, the 10-county Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands MSA, surpasses an area the size of New Jersey,  Despite this vast expanse, the region's stakeholders have rallied together as allies, streamlining processes to attract prospective companies. This collective effort reflects a shared commitment to securing victories for the region's economic growth. “I am proud to be a part of an organization, such as HREDA, that exemplifies how regionalism and collaboration can drive economic success and set high standards for regional development,” HREDA Chair and Chief Economic Development Officer at Partnership Lake Houston Stephanie Wiggins said. “By uniting various stakeholders under a common goal, HREDA leverages the strengths of the Houston region to create a prosperous and sustainable economic environment." Every year IEDC looks specifically for economic development organizations, government entities, initiatives, and programs that have demonstrated consistent, exemplary performance in the economic development profession, leading the execution of projects that have a significant impact on revitalizing communities, and playing a major role in shaping and improving the practice of economic development. “This group understands what it means to succeed together," Greater Houston Partnership President and CEO Steve Kean said. “When we work together as one to combine the expertise, assets and capabilities of our regional partners, the Houston region is unmatched in potential. Through this mindset of regionalism, we can create a more prosperous and inclusive future for all of our citizens.” Learn more about the 12-county region the Partnership represents.

University of Houston, Baylor College of Medicine to Launch Cutting-Edge Research Hub

8/26/24
The University of Houston (UH) and Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) have been awarded a $44.2 million grant from the National Center for Advancing Translational Research. This funding will support the establishment of a regional hub dedicated to advancing clinical and translational research.  Dubbed the Consortium for Translational and Precision Health (CTPH), the new hub will enhance collaboration between the two institutions and other clinical and research groups within the Texas Medical Center. The CTPH aims to expedite the translation of new technologies and discoveries into patient care and real-world impact, provide funding and resources to accelerate pilot projects and research initiatives and connect investigators with local healthcare organizations and government agencies that are dedicated to healthcare, clinical research and policy.  “Research is the engine empowering health care’s life-changing advancements,” said UH President Renu Khator, in a release. “This innovative hub will be a catalyst for groundbreaking discoveries and treatments that improve people’s quality of life. That’s what drives us at UH and we’re ecstatic to cofound a regional hub for change alongside Baylor.”  The hub will be led by BCM’s Christopher Amos, professor and director of the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, and Dr. Fasiha Kanwal, professor of medicine and chief of the section of gastroenterology and hepatology, alongside UH’s Dr. Bettina M. Beech, clinical professor of population health and chief population health officer.  “The CTPH is a partnership that draws on strengths of both institutions, creating a rich multidisciplinary environment. It will act as the vehicle to enhance the infrastructure and resources needed to effectively conduct research and implement solutions to advance healthcare,” said Dr. Carolyn Smith, interim senior vice president and dean of research at BCM. “It will help implement and create ongoing core research activities that will support the clinical translational science at both institutions.”  This strategic partnership comes at a time when local institutions are intensifying efforts to advance critical research that will deliver vital healthcare solutions. The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Rice University recently announced a collaboration to advance fundamental and translational cancer research and develop life-saving technologies. Additionally, a research initiative led by Rice University, in collaboration with MD Anderson, received an $18 million grant to improve tumor removal technology for breast, head and neck cancer.  Learn more about Houston’s Life Sciences industry.
